Late Shankarsinh Raghuvanshi and Late Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal, popularly known as ‘Shankar-Jaikishan‘, was a very famous and successful duo of the Golden Period of Indian Music Industry. Their musical career started with the film ‘Barsaat’ in 1949 and continued till the film ‘Andaaz’ in 1971. Shankar-Jaikishan initially used Mukesh, Manna Dey and Lata extensively. Rafi’s use was limited. But since around 1960, i.e. after the rise of Shammi Kapoor, Rafi has been used as the lead singer in Shankar-Jaikishan’s camp.
Today I would like to draw your attention to a interesting feature of Shankar-Jaikishan’s musical career.
If one was asked to figure out duet songs of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosale, what comes to mind immediately is number of songs composed by Sachindev Burman of the old generation and his son Rahuldev Burman of the new generation, in fact, many of them are still memorized by the people.
But the magical chemistry between Shankar-Jaikishan along with Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosale is not known to many. The songs done by these quartet are rarely heard. Even few people may know the songs, they may not know that they are composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
Shankar-Jaikishan rarely used Kishore Kumar’s voice. Shankar-Jaikishan has used Kishore Kumar as an actor-singer in five films starring Kishore Kumar in New Delhi, Rangoli, Shararat, Crorepati, Begunah. The same thing seems to have happened in the case of Asha Bhosle. Shankar-Jaikishan has also raraly used Asha’s voice. Still the songs given to Asha are special. Also, many singers like Talat, Hemant Kumar, Subir Mukherjee, Suman Kalyanpur and many more have been used by Shankar-Jaikishan, but today’s topic is different, we will talk later about it.
But in 1968, in the movie ‘Duniya’ starring Dev Anand and Vaijayantimala, the voice of ‘Kishore Kumar’ was used for the lead role played by Dev Anand. I think Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosale’s duet song ‘Duriyan Najdikiyan Ban Gayi‘, which is picturized on lead actor and actress of the film, has brought new trends and changes in Shankar-Jaikishan’s music. There is no doubt that the listeners may have been surprised hearing this duet, as SJ have avoided to use Rafi-Lata or Rafi-Asha combo. Also, around this time, Kishore had become the lead singer since 1969. At this time, Shankar-Jaikishan has made nice use of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosale combination and has given number of beautiful compositions to this singer duo in many films.
Shankar-Jaikishan has used allowed Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosale to sing duets in a number of films from 1968 to 1971. We will now watch or listen some of those songs.
These songs give a different experience and joy same as duet songs given by Shankar Jaikishan to Rafi and Asha. As per the composition style of Shankar Jaikishan, we have before listened many duets by Rafi-Lata or Rafi-Asha, which normally starts with a long melodious prelude, composed with the accompaniment of violin and orchestra with instruments like piano, guitar etc. it was very pleasant experience to listen the duets of Kishore and Asha in the same format of SJ’s composition style. And both Kishore and Asha have done justice to all those songs. The mood intended by the composer and lyricist were well captured by both singers. Some of the songs are also reminiscent of earlier Rafi-Asha duets.
These songs of this quartet started coming in the theatres and soon in the year 1971, the composer Jaikishan passed away. All the following songs were composed by composer Shankar. Therefore, one can feel the differences of style of the composition and orchestra in later songs.
